Shoulder impingement causes pain when lifting the arm, night pain and difficulty reaching behind the back; it is usually linked to shoulder-blade control, posture and repetitive overhead activity. The cause (posture, shoulder-blade movement, muscle imbalance) is identified; targeted exercise, manual therapy and daily-life adjustments are applied. Frozen shoulder and post-surgery processes are also planned.
Most impingement improves with physiotherapy; a doctor's opinion is sought if there is no progress.
Usually 6–12 weeks; frozen shoulder takes longer.
