When to Consider Couples Therapy: 6 Signs

Short answer: Couples therapy helps most when started before resentment sets in. If you recognise two or more of the signs below, a first session is a low-risk way to check whether the process is for you.

Six signs

  1. The same argument repeats without resolution.
  2. You avoid talking to prevent conflict.
  3. Trust has been shaken and has not recovered.
  4. Physical or emotional closeness has faded.
  5. You disagree deeply about parenting, family or money.
  6. One of you is unsure whether to stay.

What happens in sessions?

The therapist identifies the couple's negative cycle, helps each partner express underlying needs and practises new ways of talking. Sessions are usually 60–75 minutes, weekly or fortnightly.

What if my partner will not come?

You can start individually; working on your side of the pattern often changes the relationship, and your partner may join later.
