When Does Physiotherapy Start After Surgery?

Short answer: In most orthopaedic surgeries, controlled movement starts within the first days. Post-surgery physiotherapy follows your surgeon's protocol through swelling control, range of motion, strength, balance and return to work or sport. Starting late increases stiffness and muscle loss.

Stages

  1. Protection (0–2 weeks): swelling and pain control, safe movement
  2. Range of motion (2–6 weeks): gradually opening the joint
  3. Strength (6–12 weeks): regaining muscle
  4. Function: balance, stairs, walking, running
  5. Return: work or sport once criteria are met

Common mistakes

  • Stopping exercises once pain eases
  • Skipping the home programme
  • Returning to sport before criteria are met

What to bring

Your surgery report and, if available, your surgeon's rehabilitation protocol.
