Loss of Neck Curve: Can Exercise Help?

Short answer: Loss of the natural forward curve of the neck is not a disease in itself; it is usually the result of posture and muscle imbalance. Regular physiotherapy exercises and ergonomic changes markedly reduce pain and stiffness.

Symptoms

  • Constant stiffness in the neck and upper shoulders
  • Headache starting at the base of the skull
  • Tingling into the arms
  • Pain increasing after long screen use

Causes

Head tilted forward at screens, a high pillow, stress-related muscle tension and weak upper-back muscles. Every 2–3 cm the head moves forward greatly increases the load on the neck.

What exercise does

The aim is not to 'restore' the curve on an X-ray but to reduce pain and rebalance muscles: strengthening deep neck flexors, stretching the chest, activating the upper back.

Four daily changes

  1. Top of the screen at eye level
  2. Move every 40–50 minutes
  3. Pillow height that supports the neck
  4. Phone at eye level, not head down
