Anger Management: 6 Practical Techniques

Short answer: Anger management is not about eliminating anger but noticing it before the boiling point and expressing it without harm. That requires recognising body signals, taking time-outs and correcting the thoughts that inflate anger.

Six techniques

  1. Early warning: jaw clenching, heat, fast breathing.
  2. Time-out: "I cannot talk now, let's continue in 20 minutes."
  3. Breathing: long exhales slow the nervous system.
  4. Thought check: "Is he doing it on purpose, or is there another explanation?"
  5. I-statements: "I feel…" instead of "You always…".
  6. Repair: if there was an outburst, apologise and repair.

When to seek help

If outbursts damage relationships, work or lead to legal trouble, or if intense regret follows, a structured programme is worthwhile.
