What Is OCD and Can It Be Treated?

Short answer: In OCD, unwanted repetitive thoughts (obsessions) create intense anxiety, and repeated behaviours (compulsions) are performed to reduce it. Compulsions relieve briefly but strengthen the cycle. Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is the best-evidenced therapy for breaking it.

Common obsessions and compulsions

  • Contamination fear → washing, cleaning
  • Fear of harm → checking, seeking reassurance
  • Need for symmetry → ordering, counting
  • Unwanted religious or sexual thoughts → mental rituals

Tidy or OCD?

A tidy person enjoys order and relaxes; in OCD the ritual is driven by anxiety, takes more than an hour a day and causes distress when skipped.

What therapy involves

  1. Mapping the obsession–compulsion cycle
  2. Gradual, planned exposure to feared situations
  3. Experiencing anxiety fall without the ritual
  4. Medication evaluation with a psychiatrist if needed
